THEME PARKS OF DISNEY
The Shanghai Disney theme park was a mega project full of challenges. It was a huge undertaking for our Kitchen department.
This project involved six job sites (Central Back of House, Main Entrance Garden, Fantasy Land, Adventure Isle, Treasure Cove, and Tomorrow Land). It required fully mobilizing our resources and carefully tasking our team to maximize workflow.
Just getting to know the right document flow and people we collaborated with took almost 2 months. We also had to co-ordinate with the team working on BIM, a 3-D service drawing software, which was new to us and the industry at that time.
What concerned us most was having six job sites that had to be completed at the same time. Kitchen projects tend to run behind, but we were determined to finish the work in a timely manner.
Safety comes first over other issues in the course of installation.
To handle this mega project, we had to fully understand the strength and capability of our own individual resources before correctly mapping out our team formations. Thankfully with the right team on the right task, a lot of normally unpredictable issues became predictable.
Had this job been managed 10 years ago when social media and cloud computing were unavailable, it would have been much harder. These amazing tools kept our team posted in real time (e-mail was too slow to keep people on the same page regarding progress) and the best part is that it’s free! We even converted American teammates to WeChat users.
A third-party Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) consultant was hired to make sure we didn’t step across the safety line.
A special task force from Disney in the US was employed to pick up the pace months before completion, as the job experienced delays in many areas. A grueling effort was made to keep the progress on time without compromising the expected work quality.
